Added Sep 07 11:07: Once again, an excellent interview from @[195561691234370:274:Sammensværgelsen – en dansk X-Files podcast] with Darin Morgan that is comprehensive and includes his Millennium work as well as his X-Files work! Some Ten Thirteen behind the scenes info is corrected for posterity, we get insight on how creatives perceive parts of the fandom, we learn where the Lenny puppet from Humbug is today, and much more. Darin is so Frank and straightforward about what works and what doesn’t in his episodes, even though each and every one is now the stuff of legend, I wouldn’t change a thing. Very recommended listening!

*OUR FAVOURITE SHOW TURNS 28 TODAY!*

Yet another stellar interview from @[195561691234370:274:Sammensværgelsen – en dansk X-Files podcast], with the *legendary* Bob Goodwin, perhaps the most important person behind the scenes after Chris Carter! He ran a tight ship and steered it towards a vision of a TV show that didn’t pale in comparison to theatrical films, and he even wrote the excellent semi-mythology episode Demons along the way. His enthusiasm is infectious, when he talks on and on about this beloved show, how he directed his wife Sheila Larken (Ma Scully), how Spielberg thought was the best show ever (and approached him to do Taken), how his cameo on Anasazi was edited out, how he had to let go of the show when it left Vancouver, and much, much more!

In the 1990s, the influence of could be felt everywhere! In this example, the dark and gridded photography, the shots of hospital corridors, of government facilities, of typed documents and photographic “evidence”, everything points to TXF! The topic, remote viewing and its use by the US government, is very TXF-like as well, but some 25 years later it still hasn’t been properly proven using the scientific method.

20 years ago today: the season 8 finale Existence aired! To many this is the most appropriate end for as a whole. There’s so much in this episode to love (the feeling of the end of an era, the dealings & mind games of Knowle Rohrer, the final scene, yes I even like s8 New Age Reyes) but there’s so much I personally dislike too (apex New Testament soap opera meets Terminator, lots of running around in the FBI building padding for time, the directing is very made-for-TV especially in Krycek’s final moments, the tease with the threat to William that vanishes to nothingness). It’s the final the whole season was building up towards, a unique experiment in serialization that the series only attempted before during early season 2 for other pregnancy-related reasons!

…so yeah, I’m still Team Requiem!

The Pentagon is about to release a big report on UFOs soon — an unprecedented event for government transparency! And many people are saying that finally after all these years are being vindicated! But TXF is not only Mulder, it’s also Scully, and an aerial phenomenon is not synonymous with extraterrestrial intelligence. If close analysis of what has been released so far is any indication, it might not be as ground-breaking as it’s hyped up to be.

The linked article contains plenty of simple and short videos showing how easily explainable phenomena are behind the videos that have been making the rounds over the past year.

“The three videos that partly drove this wave were vaunted as prime examples of “official” UFOs. Claims were made that they showed impossible physics or evidence of advanced technology, possibly anti-gravity warp drives (hinting at aliens). However, close examination of the videos by myself and others over the three years since they were released has shown them to be far more mundane than first thought.”

New beetle species discovered and named after iconic sci-fi heroines

“For example, the C. scully beetle was named after Dana Scully, Gillian Anderson’s character on “The X-Files.”
The character is also behind what’s known as the “Scully Effect.” By showing a successful female scientist on TV, the show helped raise awareness of science, technology, engineering and mathematics — or STEM — professions among young women.
In their paper, Smith and Cognato wrote, “We believe in the ‘Scully Effect’ and hope future female scientists, real and fictional, continue to inspire children and young adults to pursue STEM careers.”

IDW Publishing still holds the license for comics – there are plans for future comics, but no plans for when these would be published. As a reminder, sales were decreasing as IDW moved from Joe Harris’ excellent Season 10/11 in 2013-2016 to revival-set comics to one-offs, ending in 2018.

https://www.facebook.com/CuartoMundoCL/posts/2671841073053777

May 21, 2020 19:37

Today May 21 marks the *20th anniversary* of the airing of season 7 finale, “Requiem”. After all these years, given what followed, I still see this as the most apt point to call it a *series* finale, even if nothing had followed — no season 8, no movies, nothing. There is value to ending something instead of having eternal sequels and revivals and reboots, in any work of art. Would you rather have more and more of something with some good in increasingly less dense proportions, or a short compact run that shines for the ages? Fade out from overexploitation or be remembered as short and sharp?

“Requiem” was not perfect and the mythology of season 7 as a whole was lacklustre, partly due to many behind the scenes issues. But there is a poetic quality to ending things here: coming full circle at the site of the Pilot (the kind of thing you do for a finale, not a middle chapter). Mulder “discovering his Truth/God” with that abduction, Scully getting the unexpected pregnancy (which is less problematic if the show had stopped there and we didn’t play the games of season 8 and beyond), the negative counter-balancing the positive. A tragic end where the heroes are separated worthy of a theatre play or a classic novel. An ending which leaves the door open to the imagination like classic X-Files (will Mulder return? is Scully’s pregnancy a miracle?), which is more satisfying than the developments writers came up with afterwards in order to continue the story endlessly. Ending with a “bang” instead of in season 8 ending with the heroes together but with the mythology in shambles.

20 years since the 1990s ended, since The X-Files ended with no “to be continued”.

May 27, 2020 15:37

Finally saw the Breaking Bad movie #ElCamino! Memory refresher: in Vince Gilligan’s #ΤheXFiles episode “Paper Hearts”, child serial killer John Lee Roche’s car was also a 1970s El Camino; Mulder finds clues hidden in the car’s camper shell (Alice in Wonderland book and cloth hearts). The car and the camper shell are also featured in Gilligan’s movie! (and, no spoilers, but I half-expected Jesse to find what he was looking for in the camper shell)

Bonus trivia: in “Paper Hearts” the car is in Hollyville; in “El Camino” it’s at the address Holly & Arroz (Rice). Gilligan inserts many references to his girlfriend Holly Rice in his works!

Sneak peak into : The Official Archives, coming September 15. 50 case files examined, from 1993 to 2018. It looks like a modern-looking FBI Agent discovered Mulder & Scully’s files and reads them through and takes handwritten notes. The sample pages are on the Wanshang dhole, from 6X16: Alpha! 50 cases and about 300 pages for about 150 stand alone episodes, that’s about 6 pages per case and 1/3 of the cases covered – a best of!
